The Energy sector encompasses all the energy sources that power Evansville's infrastructure, including the electricity, natural gas, and other fuels used across homes, businesses, and industrial sites. Grid-supplied electricity from CenterPoint Energy is the single largest source of community-wide emissions, accounting for 60.6% of total greenhouse gas emissions. This reflects Indiana's historically carbon-intensive electric grid, which has relied heavily on coal-fired generation.
Stationary energy as a whole represents 78.6% of Evansville's total emissions, making it by far the most important focus area for the City's climate goals. The good news is that CenterPoint Energy is in the process of transitioning away from coal-fired generation, with plans to retire its remaining coal units by 2027 and shift toward a portfolio dominated by solar and wind energy. As this grid transition unfolds, the City and its residents can further reduce emissions by improving building energy efficiency and supporting local renewable energy adoption.
