Energy efficiency and weatherization measures, such as air sealing, insulation, and high‐efficiency heating and cooling systems, can lower the amount of energy needed to heat and cool homes. By reducing wasted energy, these improvements cut GHG emissions at the source and help reduce energy costs. In this way, it's a win-win: lower monthly utility costs for residents and lower emissions!
We know that our current energy rates put our lower to moderate income residents at risk of disconnects. While some weatherization programs are available for everyone, our city's focus is on promoting these programs to our residents that are most at-risk. Weatherization assistance has benefits way beyond lowering GHG emissions. Taking advantage of these programs improves indoor air quality and comfort and reduces maintenance needs.
Enhances energy security
Diversifying our local energy source mix to include renewable energy reduces our reliance on fossil fuels, which are more vulnerable to supply disruptions and price fluctuations. Renewable energy and energy efficiency improvements enable residents and businesses to reduce their energy use and costs. These actions safeguard grid capacity, improve grid resilience, and enhance energy security for all.
Reduces costs
Investing in clean, sustainable, and energy-efficient buildings, transportation, and waste management systems reduces both short-term and long-term operating expenses. Implementation of these systems will also reduce air pollution that adversely affects public health and climate stability, reducing costs associated with health care and climate-related damages.
Enhances equity
Equitable and affordable access to technologies and programs helps residents save money, reach essential services, and cope with climate impacts. Equitable access ensures even the most vulnerable and underserved have the opportunity to be safe, healthy, and resilient to climate impacts.
