
One of the most effective strategies for reducing GHG emissions is shifting electricity production from fossil fuels and towards renewables. Expanding solar can help households and businesses lower their utility costs while reducing their carbon footprint. Residential solar systems displace grid power that in Evansville is partially fossil fuel based. Efforts to expand residential solar in the past include a partnership between Morton Solar and Community Action Program of Evansville (CAPE) where we were able to place two 4-kW rooftop systems on homes developed. This offset nearly half of those households’ annual electricity use! Nonprofit organizations such as Solar United Neighbors (SUN) also play a key role by helping residents organize solar co-ops, navigate available incentives, and advocate for solar-supportive policies across Indiana. SUN is launching a solar co-op on May 11, 2026 to make solar more affordable for Evansville residents.
Evansville created a solar checklist for our city's website to inform potential solar customers of the permitting requirements for solar. This creates transparency and lowers the barriers to getting residential solar. Evansville also amended Title 18 in 2022 to clearly define zoning and permitting requirements for all types of solar including residential, commercial, and large scale solar. We are actively seeking ways to lower the barriers for residents to gain access to their cost saving technology.

Investing in clean, sustainable, and energy-efficient buildings, transportation, and waste management systems reduces both short-term and long-term operating expenses. Implementation of these systems will also reduce air pollution that adversely affects public health and climate stability, reducing costs associated with health care and climate-related damages.
