SolSmart is a national recognition program funded by the U.S. Department of Energy that helps municipalities limit solar permitting delays and clarify confusing regulations to make solar installations faster and more affordable. The City of Evanvsille was awarded with a "Bronze" designation from the SolSmart program in 2024, acknowledging substantial efforts already made in this area. We plan to continue to attain higher levels of SolSmart.
Streamlining the solar process directly lowers GHG emissions by accelerating the deployment of clean energy. Significant co-benefits include local job creation in the solar industry, economic savings on energy bills, and enhanced grid resilience during peak demand. Moreover, clear and consistent solar guidelines foster equitable access for all residents, ensuring that underserved neighborhoods aren’t left behind in the solar transition.
Reduces costs
Investing in clean, sustainable, and energy-efficient buildings, transportation, and waste management systems reduces both short-term and long-term operating expenses. Implementation of these systems will also reduce air pollution that adversely affects public health and climate stability, reducing costs associated with health care and climate-related damages.
Supports local economy
An increase in demand for renewable energy systems, clean transportation options, and sustainable waste and land management methods create opportunities for research and innovation, market growth, product manufacturing, contractual services, and workforce development - all which furthers investment in the local economy.
