One of the most effective ways to reduce emissions is to reduce vehicle miles traveled by improving local and regional transport options. Evansville has an extensive public bus system already in place! In the last two years, we also added METS Mirco as a service to provide low-emission, affordable car rides to residents similar to Uber or Lyft.
The City of Evansville is working to expand public transit and make it more accessible for all residents. For example, the METS Micro service was recently introduced in the Jacobsville area, helping connect more residents to reliable transportation.
Improving public transit encourages fewer single-occupancy car trips and supports shared or active ways of getting around. This can reduce traffic, shorten travel times, and lower pollution from vehicles. Fewer cars on the road also mean cleaner air and progress toward the City’s goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2030.

Improves air quality
Policies, practices, and programs that limit fossil fuel combustion reduce the emission of harmful air pollutants, such as particulate matter, nitrogen oxides, and sulfur dioxides. Adopting more sustainable actions enhances our air quality, resulting in improved health and a higher quality of life for everyone.

Improves mobility
Investing in a network of public, shared, and active transportation options provides more affordable and accessible mobility options for all residents to reach essential amenities and services. Clean transportation options will reduce traffic volume and congestion, travel time, costs, and air pollution, leading to easier and healthier travel through the city.

Enhances equity
Equitable and affordable access to technologies and programs helps residents save money, reach essential services, and cope with climate impacts. Equitable access ensures even the most vulnerable and underserved have the opportunity to be safe, healthy, and resilient to climate impacts.
