Over the past five years, the city has taken steps to make it easier and safer for people in Evansville to walk and bike.
The Master Trails Plan was created with community input to guide where new trails should be built and how to better connect neighborhoods to schools, parks, and local businesses. Expanding these trails gives residents more opportunities for recreation while making it easier to choose walking or biking for short trips.
The City’s complete streets policy supports this effort by making sure road projects are designed for everyone, not just drivers. New and improved streets now include features like bike lanes, wider sidewalks, and safer crosswalks.
Together, these efforts help create a more connected city where residents have safe, healthy, and convenient options for getting around.

Improves public health
Policies, practices, and programs that prevent harmful pollution, promote active, healthy lifestyles, and shelter residents from weather extremes lower the risk of chronic disease and premature death. They also enhance public health and wellness, particularly for residents who are most vulnerable to environmental stressors.

Improves mobility
Investing in a network of public, shared, and active transportation options provides more affordable and accessible mobility options for all residents to reach essential amenities and services. Clean transportation options will reduce traffic volume and congestion, travel time, costs, and air pollution, leading to easier and healthier travel through the city.
