Making it easier and safer to walk or bike is one of the best ways to reduce short car trips in Evansville. The City is working toward becoming a League of American Bicyclists Bicycle Friendly Community and a Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center Walk Friendly Community, two national programs that recognize cities that support safe, connected places to walk and ride. Earning these designations would show Evansville’s commitment to healthy, low-carbon ways of getting around.
By improving trails, bike routes, and sidewalks, the City can make it easier for residents to choose walking or biking for everyday trips. These improvements help reduce traffic and pollution while supporting healthier lifestyles and safer streets. Evansville will continue working with local partners to expand connections across the city so more people can comfortably walk or bike to work, school, parks, and businesses.

Improves quality of life/place
Incorporating greenspace and green infrastructure in community design contributes to cleaner air and water, cooler temperatures, restorative recreational and social spaces, and a more attractive and livable community. Increasing public awareness about programs and services that will better prepare residents to cope with climate impacts will improve community resiliency and quality of life.

Improves public health
Policies, practices, and programs that prevent harmful pollution, promote active, healthy lifestyles, and shelter residents from weather extremes lower the risk of chronic disease and premature death. They also enhance public health and wellness, particularly for residents who are most vulnerable to environmental stressors.

Improves mobility
Investing in a network of public, shared, and active transportation options provides more affordable and accessible mobility options for all residents to reach essential amenities and services. Clean transportation options will reduce traffic volume and congestion, travel time, costs, and air pollution, leading to easier and healthier travel through the city.
