
Green infrastructure uses natural systems, such as rain gardens, green roofs, and permeable pavement, to capture and manage stormwater where it falls. Expanding these approaches across Evansville can reduce flooding, ease pressure on the combined sewer system, improve water quality, and enhance public spaces.
The city has already made strong progress. The Evansville Water & Sewer Utility’s Green Infrastructure Cost Participation Policy supports projects like bioswales and curb extensions, while the Toyota Trinity Stormwater Park captures millions of gallons of runoff beneath a downtown park. Projects like the Walnut Street Improvement further integrate green infrastructure to separate stormwater from wastewater flows, demonstrating the value of these investments.

Investing in clean, sustainable, and energy-efficient buildings, transportation, and waste management systems reduces both short-term and long-term operating expenses. Implementation of these systems will also reduce air pollution that adversely affects public health and climate stability, reducing costs associated with health care and climate-related damages.
