Evansville's Climate Action Plan (2025)

A climate action plan (CAP) is a strategic document that local governments use to guide their efforts in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and preparing for the impacts of climate change. The City of Evansville developed its 2025 Climate Action Plan to provide a roadmap with actionable strategies for the City and its residents to ensure a safe, healthy, and resilient community.

The 2025 CAP was developed by the Evansville Climate Collaborative (ECC), under the guidance of KERAMIDA Inc., with input from over 30 community stakeholders. The plan presents 50 priority actions across 5 sectors aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving air quality, reducing energy use, and improving the community's resilience to climate impacts:

• Energy — Increase energy efficiency and transition to renewable energy sources to address the City's largest source of emissions (78.6%).
• Transportation — Reduce vehicle miles traveled and transition to low-emission vehicles to tackle the 15% of emissions from transportation.
• Waste — Increase recycling and composting while preventing waste at its source to reduce the 6.4% of emissions from solid waste.
• Land — Integrate green infrastructure and agriculture, and encourage clean and sustainable land management to expand the City's 24% tree canopy.
• Resiliency — Improve resilience to extreme weather and increase community awareness and equity to protect the most vulnerable residents.

Based on the City's 2023 greenhouse gas inventory, Evansville emitted over 2.7 million metric tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO₂e). The plan sets ambitious reduction targets of 30% by 2030 and 80% by 2050. With CenterPoint Energy's anticipated renewable grid mix, emissions will automatically decline, but the City can take strategic action to further accelerate these reductions.

This plan builds on the original Evansville Climate Action Plan (2021), updating and streamlining strategies based on their effectiveness and current relevance. It is a strategic plan with achievable actions over the next five years (2025–2030) that will contribute to longer-term goals through 2050 and beyond.
